To tell the story of The Eclectic Viewpoint is to
tell the story of Cheyenne Turner, which of course, begins before that
special evening in early 1992.
The crowd was small. It was Friday, January 10, and
the lecture was held in the Richardson Civic Center Auditorium. Interest
was high in the JFK assassination conspiracy theory and the speaker was
Robert Groden. Cheyenne was excited about holding her first lecture and
scared it might be a failure. Her voice faltered a little when she began
the introduction. It must have been frightening.
Ticket sales were not enough to cover expenses. She
probably felt it was a failure, at least financially. But, the success
of that first lecture is apparent by events of the next seven years.
During 1992 she conducted seven more lectures, and
was never again able to hold eight events in a year. Her lectures become
so popular the mailing list began to grow along with the workload.
She conducted and arranged a total of forty events
through October, 1998. Audiences benefited, as did the speakers. Several
credit Cheyenne with expanding their speaking career. The mailing list
grew from a few dozen to about 8,000 names. Requests for information are
still coming from all over the United States, Canada, and approximately
twenty other countries.
The images of speakers on the front cover (March,
1999, issue of The Forum magazine) are a small sampling of her speakers,
arranged as if they are gems on her necklace. That design was chosen to
represent her achievements. The stone roman column and the magazine name
The
Forum are used because of the strength of her slogan, "Forum of Extraordinary
Science, Unusual Phenomena & Diverse Perspectives."
As a testament to her memory, The Eclectic Viewpoint
was continued. As proof of the power of her idea, it is still going and
will keep on going.
It began with a vision. In late 1991, she was told
to make her mission in life the spreading of what she called, "interesting
and helpful knowledge." For some time prior to that, she had been President
of a UFO group and was accustomed to finding such speakers. In her searches,
she often encountered fascinating people in other fields.
The first newsletter stated, "... as part of my effort
to help bring these topics to the public, I have organized The Eclectic
Viewpoint which will provide a forum for interesting and diverse speakers
on many subjects."
The best way to finish her story is simply to list
the events in reverse time order.
